Commercial Graduate Programme

The graduate programme is designed for recent graduates from bachelor’s or master’s degree backgrounds, and spans 24 months, featuring at least 4 rotations throughout the business. Rotations will vary depending on business needs and will be tailored to expand your knowledge and skillset, however graduates will have the opportunity to gain exposure to Trading Operations, Trading Analysis, Strategy, Product Control, Shipping, Logistics and Supply Optimisation. Each rotation will comprise of commercial projects or business as usual tasks to support the day-to-day business operations.
 
As the initial 24-month contract comes to an end, we look to offer permanent contracts to our Graduates where possible, allowing you to progress your career in one of the areas from your rotations or, subject to further assessment and business requirement, move into a role within one of our commercial trading departments.

Summer Internship Programme

Petroineos offers exciting summer internship opportunities across a range of departments. Our internships provide an opportunity to build a valuable network, as well as developing an understanding of the skills needed to succeed in a commodities trading environment, through hands-on projects and constructive feedback. We welcome applications from candidates who are currently in their penultimate year of a bachelor’s or master’s programme, or who have graduated within the last year.
Interns have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a 10-12  week paid internship during the summer, usually from early July to late September. During this time, you will tackle exciting, commercial projects that help our teams to solve real business challenges. 
From day one, you will be entrusted with meaningful responsibilities and will receive support and guidance from a dedicated supervisor, ensuring a valuable learning experience.
 
Successful completion of our intern programme could lead to you being considered for a place on one of our graduate programmes in the future.

Emerging Talent Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications do candidates need to participate in the Graduate Programme?

We welcome applications from intelligent and driven bachelor’s or master’s degree graduates. The chosen area of studies is not restricted, however degrees such as Business, Economics, Physics, Maths, Environmental Science, Engineering, Shipping/Energy, Trade and Finance may be advantageous. Candidates who are able to showcase a real interest in the energy and commodities trading industry, either through membership of relevant societies or previous internships, will be at an advantage. An understanding of coding languages and experience with Excel are also important.

What is the recruitment / interview process for Graduate and Intern opportunities?

Applications for our Graduate Programme open in September each year and can be accessed via our careers website, where you will find further information and be guided through the application process.
 
The Talent Acquisition team, along with the Graduate hiring committee, will then review your application and should you be successful at the shortlist stage, you will be invited for further assessment and potentially a final interview and presentation at our offices here in London.
 
Applications must include a CV and Cover Letter and should be no longer than three A4 pages. 
 
Applications for our Intern Programme open in April time and will also be advertised via the company careers website. Your application will be reviewed, and if selected, you will be invited to a call with a member of our Talent Acquisition team, followed by an interview with a representative from the business if shortlisted.

When should I apply?

For our Graduate Programme, we begin accepting applications towards the end of September each year. For our Intern Programme, we accept applications from April onwards. Keep an eye on our careers website for updates!

What is the role of the supervisor?

Your supervisor is the person who you will report directly to on the Graduate Programme. This individual will change with each 6-month rotation, depending on the department and team you are assigned to. 

Your supervisor will work closely with you to agree on suitable objectives and learning outcomes, and will have regular meetings with you to provide support and direction on your set projects or objectives.

What is the role of the mentor?

Your mentor is a key figure on the Graduate Programme, offering support and guidance as you move through your 24-month contract. 

Mentors are usually individuals who have worked in the business or industry for a significant length of time, and can therefore offer valuable feedback and insights, as well as supporting and advising you on your career development journey.

What countries offer the Petroineos Graduate Programme?

The Petroineos Graduate Programme is based in London. We welcome applications from those who hold the right to work in the UK and are able to commute to the offices here in London full-time.

What is my employment status within the Petroineos Trading Limited Graduate Programme?

You will be employed by Petroineos Trading Limited on a full-time fixed-term employment contract lasting 24 months. 

Can I choose the rotation areas I will be working in?

When selecting your graduate rotations, our goal is to align your skills and interests with the specific needs of our business. Rotations vary, however you could expect to gain exposure to areas of the business including Analysis, Trading Capability, Shipping, Operations, Refinery Optimization, Risk Control, and Power Trading. The Talent Acquisition team liaises closely with the business to support with the coordination of your rotations.

Will I get to meet and work with peers?

Each graduate is matched with a supervisor and mentor who will impart valuable insights and serve as a vital resource throughout the program. These individuals will connect you with their professional network and colleagues at Petroineos, motivating you to cultivate a robust network—an essential element of the Graduate Program.

What are some of the key requirements Petroineos look for in a graduate?

  • It is highly beneficial to have prior practical experience gained through either an internship, student jobs, or other employment, although it is not a strict requirement.
  • We are looking for driven recent graduates with a bachelor's or master's degree, or an equivalent qualification, preferably in a field related to the position.
  • Excellent English language skills both verbal and writing are essential for thriving in a multicultural setting, equally adaptability will be key to excel in the program.
  • Previous experience with Excel and any coding languages (python, SQL, etc.) will be advantageous.
